Matyas Pavlik

Glass sculptor, member of the Klumpar family of glassmakers
Matyáš Pavlík incorporates traditional glass-cutting techniques into his glass sculptures. The sculptor uses glass as a medium to explore its optical qualities. ‘s Resume Matyáš Pavlík was born in 1984 in the Czech Republic and grew up in the United States and Mexico. Both of his parents are glass sculptors, so he was surrounded by glass and art from the very beginning. His exposure to different cultures, landscapes, and languages shaped both his personality and his artistic style. While studying graphic design at the University of San Francisco, he spent a semester at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. There, he discovered a passion for working with clay and plaster and was captivated by the unlimited possibilities of fused glass sculpture. To learn the fused glass technique—a method developed in Železný Brod, North Bohemia—he moved to the Czech Republic and began working alongside his mother, Vladimíra Klumpar. In 2012, he joined the M.O.M. (Moje Objektové Múzy) design project, which introduced him to the Czech heritage of glassmaking and glass cutting. Captivated by the craftsmanship of this vanishing applied art form, he began incorporating traditional glass-cutting techniques into his conceptual fused glass sculptures. The focus of his work lies in exploring glass as a medium through varying densities of abstract forms, the way light refracts, is redirected, or is absorbed, and the use of an organic yet vibrant color palette.
