Kiln-cast glass as art and craft
In Prague on September 12, 2023, the Glaz Bridge group, production of funerary art, with the kind contribution and support of partners, announced an open one-time art competition for the design of funeral steles titled STELE WITH HEART.
Context of the competition with a funerary theme
The physical departure from earthly life is currently perceived by our society as an unattractive topic that stands on the margins of interest. Since 2021, the Glaz Bridge group has been dedicated to developing the Funeral Art program, with the intention of paying respect to the deceased through artistic means, as was once entirely common in the past. In 2023, the realization of the first part of the project titled GLASS SOUL was completed. The goal was to create a collection of funeral urns using the unique technology of kiln-cast sculpture. Twenty-one leading Czech artists from various fields participated in its creation, reflecting on the function of funerary sculpture in today's society. The urn collection was exhibited at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (May 17 – September 17, 2023) and is now continuing its exhibition tour.
What is a Stele?
Based on the success of the Glass Soul / Pietas I project, we are now proceeding to further develop the program with the Stele with Heart / Pietas III project. The goal is the artistic rendering of tomb steles, which were erected instead of monuments on graves in the Greco-Roman civilization. A stele (Greek) was a stone vertical object marking a grave, or exceptionally a monument, and usually took the form of a column or slab. This type of memorial commemoration of the deceased's existence or grave has undergone various modifications within European civilization, whether located in burial grounds or in open spaces.
