Marek Číhal

Painter, installation artist
Painter Marek Číhal views his work as a visual interplay between media. He integrates spatial and light-based objects into architecture. His works reflect the perfection of his linear drawing and his distinctive use of color. ’s CV Marek Číhal is an artist whose work can be understood as a visual exploration of the free movement between the media of painting and drawing, with forays into installation and architecture. His paintings speak through simple visuals with abstract pauses. They depict a wide range of motifs that at first glance resemble children’s drawings, while the content of the works blends directness with allegory. Marek depicts motifs popular with children, but by placing them in context with other motifs, he creates a sort of equation that points to relationships in real life. In his approach to communication, he reflects on society through traditional motifs expressed in a contemporary visual language. His work is about personal boundaries and transcending them, about tolerance of plurality, about expression and legibility, about immediacy and the possibilities of touch. Despite the complexity of its content, it is deliberately playful. He studied for two years under Václav Stratil in the Intermedia studio at the Faculty of Fine Arts (FaVU) in Brno. Beginning in 2009, he continued his studies with Vladimír Skrepl in the Painting II studio at the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU) in Prague. During his studies, he completed several internships abroad, and in the spring of 2012, he began studying concurrently at the UdK Berlin in Thomas Zipp’s painting studio. He graduated in 2013. He is a member of the group The International Bongo Bongo Brigade. In 2013, he received the Jan Světlík Prize for Promising Artists. Since 2010, he has been collaborating with Studio Acht on architectural projects. He exhibits in the Czech Republic and abroad. He is currently collaborating with gallery owner Zdeněk Sklenář.
