Tono Stano is one of the most prominent photographers on the Central European art scene. He is best known for his staged black-and-white photography, in which he interweaves the human body, light, movement, and precise composition. In addition to photography, he also creates installations, objects, and experimental projects that explore his long-standing interest in space, form, and visual perception.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S LIFE

He was born in Zlaté Moravce, Slovakia. He studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava under Milota Havránková and subsequently at the Department of Photography at FAMU in Prague, where he became one of the key figures of the so-called Slovak New Wave of staged photography. He has lived and worked in Prague since the mid-1980s.

His work is characterized by a distinctive use of light, shadow, and the human body, which he views as a fundamental artistic medium. In addition to his iconic black-and-white nudes, he creates portraits, landscape photographs, conceptual series, and spatial installations. He has a long-standing collaboration with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, for which he has created photographic portraits of international film personalities and designed the Crystal Globe, the festival’s main award.

His works have been exhibited in Europe, the United States, and Asia, and are included in the collections of institutions such as the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. For the Glass Soul collection, he created the object *Box*, in which he translates photographic concepts of light and space into molten glass. The result is a work that combines photography, sculpture, and the optical properties of glass into a unified artistic whole.
